Cleaning Hardwood Floors
For the most part, solid hardwood floors are among the easiest to keep clean.
However, it never hurts to ask the professional who will be installing your
floor for cleaning tips. Below are some tips for keeping your hardwood floor in
wonderful condition:
- Avoid oil soaps when cleaning wood floors. They can build up and create
problems when it’s time to put a maintenance coat on the floor. Instead, use
neutral pH cleaners made specifically for wood floors.
- When sweeping your wood floors, use a soft, fine bristle broom to minimize
scratching.
- Try to vacuum at least once or twice a week to remove dirt and sand. Once
again, use a soft brush attachment to minimize scratching.
- Remove wet spills ASAP because standing water will damage your wood floors.
Use soft towels or a wet/dry vacuum and then dry thoroughly.
- Close curtains and blinds or add sheer drapes to protect your hardwood floor
from the sun’s intense UV rays.
- Never wet-mop your wood floors. Use a very dry damp mop to avoid dulling the
finish, damaging the wood, and leaving a discoloring residue.
- Use area rugs in high traffic areas.
- Use floor mats for entrances.
- When moving heavy furniture, avoid dragging the furniture across your wood
flooring without first protecting it. Try slipping a piece of cloth under the
legs or covering each leg with a heavy sock.
- Some floors may require periodic waxing and buffing. Check with manufacturer.
- Put plastic or fabric-faced gliding furniture pad under the legs of furniture
to prevent scuffing and scratching during regular use.
- Avoid wearing cleats, sports shoes and high heels on your wood floor surface.
They will dent and scratch the surface.
- Be sure to follow manufacturer recommendations to treat scratches and dents.

Laminate Flooring
Laminate flooring is an inexpensive, long-lasting, durable flooring option. It
is very well liked by homeowners because installation is easy, it requires very
little maintenance, and it is environmentally friendly. Laminate flooring looks
very similar to hardwood flooring; however, it is not made from wood at all. It
is actually made from several materials that are bonded together.

Refinishing Hardwood Floors
Of all flooring materials, hardwood flooring is perhaps the most practical. Once
it is installed and treated, it will hold up for a long time and only require
cleaning here and there. However, depending on the amount of wear and tear it
receives, eventually the protective finish will wear off. Once this protective
finish starts to fade away, it becomes time to refinish the flooring.
